In this economy, with the high rate of unemployment, you have to be more creative and hungry to get a job- talk less of a good or great one.
What have you done with the time you’ve spent out of work to improve your chances of getting the job you desire? Have you taught yourself courses, acquired skills or attended seminars that can make you better than others in any given position? Have you volunteered your time for worthy causes? Have you interned?
It is not too late to make a change. A famous adage says that it is better to be prepared for an opportunity and not have one, than to have an opportunity and not be prepared.
That being said, here are 10 reasons why you were not hired or called back.
1. You didn’t write a cover letter
2. You didn’t specify
the position you want. You can’t say you want any job, it shows lack of focus and skill.
3. You copied a lot of companies in your email; even competitors. It does not show loyalty. It also shows laziness.
4. You didn’t research the company to know what positions they have open. You are an engineer but the company is hiring accountants.
5. You write the email as if you are sending a text or tweeting; in short hand.
6. You ask senseless questions; “Are you hiring? “
7. You don’t stand out. Why should you be hired for the position instead of the other hundred people that applied?
8. Your CV has spelling mistakes and is not properly formatted.
9. You came to the interview unprepared and under-dressed.
10. You didn’t know the name of the company you went to, you just said you sent out a lot of resumes and got an email asking you to come in.
There you have it. Do the opposite and increase your chances of landing that dream job!
