CONTACT ADDRESS, AN IMPEDIMENT TO YOUR JOB EMPLOYMENT

CONTACT ADDRESS, AN IMPEDIMENT TO YOUR JOB EMPLOYMENT

As I said earlier, your contact or residential address alone can discourage employers in offering you a job in their companies….Yes! It is one of the major issues taken into consideration by most employers during oral interview but majority of the graduates do not consider it important before applying for job vacancies.

You went through tertiary institution for 4 years or more, came out with good grade, can exhibit your theoretical or class experience in a practical world, prepared your CV excellently, applied for
a job position in a company, went for interview, came out from the interview room with a look of disappointment and wondered why you again.

You may have done well during interview but you are yet to receive a call from the company or you have been applying for jobs in different companies but yet no call for interview from anyone of them.

I would like to tell you that your contact or residential address on your CV may be the reason for the lack of call for interview or lack of call after interview.

In a business world, owners or managers of companies endeavour to maximize their earnings or profit and minimize their cost or expenses as much as possible. A company situated in Mile 2 (not Mile 12) and you, the applicant resides in Akute or your contact address on your CV is around Ikorodu. Such company may not offer you the job, especially when there are hundreds of applicants for the same job and whose contact or residential addresses are in areas close to company’s location like Oshodi, e.t.c. or even around Mile 2.

The company may put your daily punctuality and cost of transport into consideration during the post interview meeting to decide who among the qualified job applicants to be employed. Yes! You are qualified for the job but your contact or residential address on your CV is an impediment. I am a living witness to this one.

I am not saying that there are no qualified graduates working in a company whose location is far from their residence or contact address. I am also a living witness to this one. For instance, I used Ojota (an area where I grew up) as my contact address on my CV but actually reside in Akute and currently working in Ikoyi. During the interview, I repeatedly mentioned Ojota address when asked and the management used it as one of the criteria to determine my salary and to know my daily punctuality.

SO WHAT WILL YOU DO TO GET THE JOB with the fact the company that needs your services is far from your contact or residential address on your CV.

1.     the company offering the job opportunities has many branches in a state or all over Nigeria, then as a job applicants, there is no need for you to change your contact or residential address except it is stated in the job requirements that your service is needed only in particular branch and/or state.

2.    If the company offering the job opportunities has no branch or is only located in a particular area, then as a job applicants, it is a matter of necessity for you to change your contact or residential address close to the location of the company. If you are too far from the company’s location, you may not be called for interview or called after interview.

3.    Better still, you can have two or three formats of CV with different contact addresses on them. ( Note: the format of a CV for company is a bit different from that of a school and that of a government ministry )

Make sure that your CV is subjected to modification at anytime. You don’t have to use a format of CV to apply for all job vacancies. If you have a laptop, it is very easy for you to edit at anytime but if you don’t have, you can get yourself any storage device for easy access and editing

REMEMBER THAT IT TAKES THE GRACE AND THE MERCY OF THE LORD TO GET A JOB IN THIS PRESENT TIME OF MILLIONS OF GRADUATES DESPERATELY SEEKING JOBS and thousands of fresh graduates being released from NYSC programme three times yearly.

MAY GOD HELP US ALL….AMEN
