Oxford Brookes University is a public university in Oxford, England. It can trace its origins to 1865 when the former Oxford School of Art was established. The university was renamed in 1992 to honour its former principal, John Henry Brookes. The university's School of Architecture is one of the largest in Britain.

Description
  • A scholarship is available for students who will be studying on the Graduate Diploma in Law at Oxford Brookes University in 2017–18.
  • The scholarship will be awarded to the best essay writer.
Eligibility
  • To be eligible to enter the competition, you must have accepted a place on the GDL at Oxford Brookes commencing in 2017–18 on or by Tuesday 1 August 2017.
  • Entries will be judged by Oxford Brookes University Law School academic staff against the following criteria:
  • The ability to present a well-reasoned argument.
  • The ability to produce a succinct, coherent, and well-structured essay.
  • Good grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • The ability to write about legal issues in a way that is accessible to a reader who may not be a legal professional.
  • There is a strict 1,000 word limit (excluding footnotes). Only the first 1,000 words of an essay will be marked. 
Award
  • The scholarship is worth £2,000 to be put towards payment of GDL fees and will be awarded for the best 1,000 word essay.

8th August, 2017

Method of Application
  • To enter, please submit a 1,000 maximum word answer to the following question:
"In November 2016, the High Court ruled that the government’s argument that it was not necessary to obtain Parliamentary approval to trigger Article 50 of the Treaty of Lisbon was “contrary to fundamental constitutional principles of the sovereignty of parliament”. Even if, by the time you enter the competition, the Supreme Court has over-ruled the High Court, do you agree with the High Court’s ruling? Whatever your answer, please give reasons".
Additional Information
  • The successful entrant will be notified directly on or by Friday 18th August 2017. His or her name will also be posted on the School of Law website. 
  • The School of Law is unable to acknowledge individual entries. The decision of the judging panel is final and individual correspondence regarding the decision will not be entered into. 
  • The School of Law is unable to return entries after judging has taken place.
